Although Winter brings with it the dark and the cold, Christmas festivities are a silver lining. There is no better activity to take advantage of during the otherwise unfriendly conditions than attending the Turku Christmas markets. Rug up and make your way to the Old Great Square (Vanha Suurtori) to see the seasonally-themed stalls, and visit Santa and his elves. Take the time to whisper your Christmas wish into an elf’s ear. The elf will write down your secret wish in Santa’s book and if you have been good, you may be lucky enough to receive your reward.

Obviously if you’ve been bad then you won’t be rewarded, so skip the elf and aim instead for the glögi stalls, before looking for novel gifts to bring home to your loved ones.

The old square provides a wonderful atmosphere for the festivities, and is a great backdrop to the concerts you might be lucky to catch.
